It's Back-to-School and a Whole New Routine

It's Okay to Not Be Okay

By Marie Vandenberg, Publisher/Editor Macaroni Kid Clintonville, WI August 28, 2021

This is my last newsletter before my kids go back to school.  By this time next week, my kids will be starting a new school.  That’s the interesting thing about back to school.  It feels like more of a fresh start than The New Year.  Everything feels new, new teachers, new classes, new routines,  a new season and in some cases, new schools.

We have so many resources to help our kids adjust to all the new changes.  What about the parents?   I know that I’m starting a new season of my adulthood now too.  The CEO of Macaroni Kid National reminded us that we need to set our own new schedules to remember to schedule time for things that we need to do as business owners. But it got me thinking, I need to get back to scheduling “Mom Time”.  Not me time.  I need to schedule time that I am a Mom only.  No distractions, no work, no e-mails, no last-minute updates, no “just let me do this one thing first”.  I’ve been doing a better job of scheduling time to be a “daughter only”.  My husband has been stepping up a lot since I got “the phone call” and will take the girls to play while I visit with my parents.  But, I need to do a lot better, and faster too in that regard.

In a work-from-home or online work, it’s too easy to bring it with you.  I can’t slap a sign on the door that says “closed” or “out of the office”.  So, I’ll need to do it virtually.  I know that you’ve been seeing a few more posts lately of me asking for help when you see an event somewhere other than on my calendar to let me know.  I work 2 jobs (one is paying for the other right now), I’m the mom of 3 kids, my mom is very sick and my license renewals are coming due.  I don’t want to let anyone down.  I don’t always see flyers and posters.  When school starts, I’ll be putting my work phone away at 2pm and won’t pick it back up again until my “shift” starts the next day.  I need to do this for my health, happiness, sanity and for my family. My fear is if I don’t make this change, I’m going to burn out.  So, this change is still going to equal full-time hours, but it won’t be the equivalent of 2 full-time jobs.  I know that I’ll still have work that will need to be done after I get the kids from school, but I’m hoping it will become the exception instead of the rule.

I’m excited to go back to making real meals again. I’m not saying all this to make anyone feel sorry for me.  I honestly love doing Macaroni Kid.  I have a feeling that I’m not the only one going through a changing of the seasons and I hope this makes you feel like you’re not alone, and it’s okay to ask for help.  (Even if it just means asking for someone to “tag” you when they see something).
