Holiday Shopping Begins

Shopping Small and Local in Clintonville, Marion, Shawano, Antigo and Surrounding Areas

By Marie Vandenberg, Publisher/Editor Macaroni Kid Clintonville, WI November 7, 2021

It's hard to believe that the holiday season is quickly arriving.  The weather has been cooperating in fooling us into thinking that the holidays are still a long way away.

Since I started Macaroni KID Clintonville WI almost 5 years ago, I switched my shopping to only shopping local.  I don't even go to Appleton or Green Bay if I can help it.  I was talking with my parents that I don't shop at the "Big Box Stores" unless I'm being paid for it.  And you guys can see it.  There's usually a "sponsored article" on it, and tons of pictures of my kids and me in the store.

So, I was doing some thinking.  I want to do more to help our local businesses this holiday season.  But, I need your help with part of it.  Is there a business that you have been wanting to visit, but are a little nervous to go without knowing what to expect?  Let me help.  Send me an e-mail with the subject "Small Business Spotlight" and tell me the name of the business and a few details that you want to know more about.  Businesses - you can nominate yourself as well.

Veterans Day is this week. Military service runs deep in my family, even though I never served.  I want to connect Veterans with businesses that want to recognize their service.  If you are a business that is having a special for Veterans Day, I want to feature you.  Send me an e-mail (ASAP) with “Veterans Day” in the subject and I'll get it published on the website and social media sites prior to Veterans Day. Please make a special note if you recognize Veterans year-round.

I’m also working on Thanksgiving.  My aunt gave me some wise advice a few years ago. She told me to not fuss about the small stuff. I was feeling guilty because I just didn’t have the time to work nights full-time, plus make a Thanksgiving Dinner, plus spend quality time with the kids, and work around my husband’s schedule.  She suggested letting “someone else” handle the big stuff and make a signature dish that the kids could help me make and we could make memories at the same time. She asked me which I thought was more important for my kids to remember: Mom in the kitchen making a huge meal or a relaxed Mom helping them make a special dish?  Now, with my own mom very ill, I’m really appreciating the time. As some of you may know, my husband and I also work in EMS, so holiday meals can be difficult when you’re on shift.  So, if anyone is going to be open on Thanksgiving or if you are doing pre-made meals or even partial meals, again, send me an e-mail.  I want to make the holidays easier for those who could use it.

I'm also running a Holiday special for the Business Directory.  Wouldn't it be awesome to have one place to see all the businesses in the area in one place?  You can find hours, details, everything you need to find what you're looking for, in one place, available 24/7, sorted by category!

Part of the holiday season includes Christmas Tree shopping for some families.  I want to make it as easy as possible for families to choose the experience that is right for them.  I need a little help from the local Christmas Tree Farms to make this happen.

Of course, what are the holidays with looking at the holiday light decorations?  I know that there are two towns that are holding contests for the best decorated.  I can’t do a contest.  But I can help families find your neighborhood to make more fun memories.  I’d love to have you submit your house to my Holiday Light Guide.  I remember, when my kids were little, we’d drive around just before bedtime, usually when it was lightly snowing and look at all the lights.  The kids always slept a little better those nights.

If I can ask for just one more bit of help.  Many hands make short work. With the amount of local events happening and some severe health issues in my family, it would help me immensely if you could let me know when you see events happening. Organizers: it’s a super quick form, and it puts you right at the top of my list.  Readers: you can fill out the form too, or you can send me an e-mail or forward the post to me.

I hope everyone’s clocks adjusted correctly last night and the kids adjust to the new time easily.  I also hope you are able to head outside and enjoy the beautiful, unseasonably warm weather we’re having this weekend.  Make it a great week and be sure to check the calendar frequently. Events are being added all the time.
