**Update 3/26/2021: Unfortunately, The Second Chance Free Thrift Store will be closing its doors. Come visit the store one last time on March 25 from Noon to 3pm and again on March 26, 2021 starting at 10:30m to pick up items you need for your home and family. There are lots of treasures to be found.
“Mom, there is a store that you can shop at for free." You can imagine my reaction, but my daughter was right. Second Chance Hope Thrift Store opened in November 2017 at 134 S Main Street in Clintonville.
Lori Kobs is the founder of Second Chance Hope. It came from her desire to help people after knowing her own struggle. As a single mom with 5 kids, some with medical concerns, she knows that most people aren't looking for a hand-out, but could definitely use a hand-up. When people ask her how she can help others when she is struggling herself, she answers, "Love doesn't cost anything. Helping people is payment enough."
The store is part of a network of many other Second Chance Hope sites. It originally started out as a community resource based mainly on Facebook. It has grown to more than 27,000 members, 47 administrators and countless volunteers and W-2 workers with one physical store, 14 storage units and a need and goal for two more stores. There are Second Chance locations nationwide and statewide. The 5,000 square foot store is packed with donations and is getting more in every day. The store was recently a recipient of a very generous donation of diapers from Thrivent Financial. There are several more donations scheduled after the diaper grant runs out.
Families are able to stop into the Store as much as needed during the month of July, otherwise, families are able to shop once per week to pick up needed items (except diapers, those are limited to once per month). Anybody is welcome from anywhere. It is not necessary to be a member of any of the Second Chance sites. There is a wide, ever-changing selection of a large variety of items for every household. Every month, Second Chance Hope opens up the storage units and has a free rummage sale. August will be the Annual Back-To-School- Event at Lake Park in Black Creek. Families are able to get needed school supplies.
The staff at the store are very welcoming to everyone who stops in the store and will help families find what they’re looking for. They will also assist families with a wish list if there is something a family needs that isn’t in the store. They’ll happily explain the process and rules. Donations are accepted any time the store is open.
Second Chance recently received it’s 501(c) designation so donors are able to get a receipt for tax-deductible donations.
Second Chance is always looking for more volunteers and families to help. They often have more donations than they have storage space for them. They also need volunteers to help sort the donations. Feel free to stop in the store to see some of the treasures waiting for you to take home. Check out the different sites to see if there is a way for you to help others.
