Have you heard the saying “you only need to go as far as your own backyard"? Several local historical museums have joined together for a unique tour this summer. Stop by any of the participating locations to get your postcard and see what treasures have been hiding in your own backyard. Visit five (5) locations between now and August 31, and be entered to win some neat prizes. For even more adventure, check out the passport to find even more hidden treasures.
Do your kids love seeing the old firetrucks? Are they fascinated with the old firefighting techniques? How have the uniforms changed? Take a stroll down an old-time street much like great-grandma or grandpa would have done. Imagine waiting for your loved ones at the train station. See how they would have traveled to come to visit you. You can see a farmhouse as it was around the turn of the century or visit a home around the same time frame. How different is it from today? Make it a multi-generational visit… let the kids hear directly from their grandparents how the items were used. If you are really lucky, you can see real people using those items, giving the kids a chance to try them for themselves. Sit in a one-room schoolhouse, write on a slate chalkboard, how would that be different? What did school supply shopping look like? See the traditional logging ways, what is different, what has stayed the same? Let grandma and grandpa reminisce about the “good old days”, put a picture to the stories that the kids have been hearing. My grandma told me a story from when she was a little girl, hopping on her horse, ducking her head down and chasing her big brother out the barn door. Did her barn in the 20s look like our modern barns? Walk the same steps, hear the slam of the screen door that brings us back to happy memories. Show the kids where they came from, let them learn. Where will your family go first?
