As winter comes nearer, we find comfort in our families, friends, food and beverages. Today I’m going to share with you my recipe for homemade chai latte along with a few options to make it your very own. A few of my young, tough critics have said it’s the best. And you most likely have the ingredients in your house already.
Here's what you'll need:
Large Saucepan
2 C. Water
2 Regular Tea Bags OR Chai tea blend
1/8-1/4 teaspoon EACH of ginger and cardamon
1 whole clove
1 cinnamon stick
6 Splenda packets or 1/4 cup Sugar or Stevia
2 1/2 C. Milk
I buy a bulk chai tea blend and use heat seal tea bags to make mine, which makes it even faster. If you have a chai tea blend, then you don’t need the next 3 ingredients. I prefer a richer taste to my chai latte, so I use a mix of whole milk and fresh cream. You can adjust the amount of sweetener to your own taste. Honey is also a possibility, but it will change the taste of the latte.
In a large saucepan, add the water, tea, and spices. Heat slowly to a low boil for 5 minutes. Add the sweetener and the milk. Return to a boil. This won’t take long, and if you don’t watch it carefully, it could boil over. You can also run a stick of butter around the rim of the pan and that will prevent the boil-over.
Strain and enjoy. Sometimes the tea bags will break and the boiled milk could leave that scum on the top; while it’s harmless, it might not taste the best, so the little cup strainer fixes all that.
I occasionally double or triple the recipe and keep the strained latte in a mason jar in the fridge. I made a double-batch for these photos.
