National Library Week

Libraries don't just have books anymore!

By Marie Vandenberg, Publisher/Editor Macaroni Kid Clintonville, WI April 3, 2022

My earliest memories involve the two libraries in my life.  The School Library and the Public Library. In the town that I grew up in, we had a Carnegie library.  Andrew Carnegie donated several all over the country.  Once you've seen one, you'll instantly recognize them even if they aren't the town library anymore.  There was nothing quite like the super tall shelves filled with books and the tables, chairs, bean bag chairs, the old wooden card catalog.  (did I just date myself?) One thing that hasn't changed is the smiling, friendly, helpful librarian.  I absolutely loved the summer reading programs.  The number of books that were read.  It was also one of the few places that were air-conditioned back then. Pencils and pizzas, those were the motivators for getting us to read, and it worked!

Next week, the libraries in our area have come up with some fun ways to celebrate National Library Week.  A few of our libraries have gone “fine-free” a while ago. What this means, is no late fees, but if you lose or damage materials, then you’ll still need to pay for them. Other libraries are fine-free for kids and teens.  Adults, we still need to get our materials back in time! So, these libraries have come up with other fun ways to celebrate.

A few other libraries are having fee-discounts.  So, if you have some overdue library materials, now is a great time to return them.

Be sure to stop in for the crafts, snacks, and FUN the libraries have planned.

So many of our libraries have so much more to borrow than books, audiobooks, movies, and music.  They have some of the "old" formats, like DVD's and CD's, in addition to streaming and downloadable options.  I like to download my books, then I don't need to worry about returning them on time.  Did you know that one of our local libraries has a cotton candy machine you can borrow for two (2) weeks?  How about a large mixer?  I've borrowed the projector many, many times for fun, family movie nights.  Have you checked out the "Library of Things"?
