What's Happening This Week

Find Your Family Fun in Clintonville, Shawano, Oconto, Antigo and More!

By Marie Vandenberg, Publisher/Editor Macaroni Kid Clintonville -Shawano - Oconto - Antigo August 8, 2022

It's hard to believe that we're already a full week into August.  Where did the summer go? The good news, there is still plenty of time to fit in a few more family adventures before summer comes to an end and school starts back up.

This week is Sneak a Zucchini onto your neighbor's porch.  In this week's newsletter, we also show you how to sneak zucchini into your child's ice cream.  Personally, my kids and I love zucchini fries.  If you need help finding a zucchini, check the calendar for the local farmers' markets.

Blueberry season is winding down.  It was a good year, so Blueberry Haven is only having two evening picks this week.  If your kids love blueberries as much as mine do, this is a great time to stock up.  Just a hint from my own family.  I freeze the blueberries and keep them in a zipper-lock bag and then when we're in a hurry, we'll put a few blueberries in the kids' oatmeal.  The hot oatmeal thaws the blueberries quickly without getting squishy and the frozen blueberries get the oatmeal to "the right eating temperature" sooner.  No more, "it's too hot to eat!"

A few weeks ago we did a day-trip to Shawano on a Saturday.  We stopped by the Shawano Farmer's Market and then swung by the Shawano Historical Society Zachow Train Depot for their Train Depot tour.   My husband is a huge train nut. He's an HO modeler.   When my son was younger, we had a "battle" between the "Steamies and the Diesels". We actually had 2 separate models in the basement and my daughter was a regular at our old model railroad club.  So, on our trip to Shawano on a Saturday morning, it just made sense to stop and see the train depot.  We had Dean for our docent/tour guide. He didn't memorize facts, he literally told the stories. Dean told me he's 86 years old and grew up in Zachow.  The train depot restoration was a fun collaboration between friends. I'll let him tell you how it came to be. It's fascinating because you choose the experience that you get.  You can get the full tour in 10 minutes or you can spend 2 1/2 hours there. Dean said his record was 2 1/2 hours. We were there for 2 hours and saw one building.  Keep in mind that my girls are 11 and 8 and they didn't get bored.   They had fun operating the telegraph and learning about all the cool buildings and the work that went into the building.  It has a real, working telegraph and they went so far into detail that they learned American Morse Code so it would be accurate to the time period and location.  This museum isn't just a collection of "all things railroad".  This is a case of you being able to step back in time and see how it was in Zachow, WI in the 1920's with a handful of artifacts ranging from 1909-1945. There are still a few weeks left and we plan on going back so we can see the rest of the buildings.

Here are my Top 5 events this week:

Gillett - 🚢 "Unsinkable Ships"

Shawano - 🚤 Free Waterski Show - only a few shows left to the season.  We've gone a few weeks now and it's incredible to see!

Antigo Summer Play & Learn

Shawano - 🚂 Summer Spotlight Depot Tours

Bonduel - 🔁 🐊 Alligator Feeding

While Sunflower Fest at Bergsbaken Farms is officially over, there is still time to check out the fields.  They also have popcorn and sunflower oil for sale across the street from the fields.  Keep in mind, that there are tons more events happening.  There are still plenty of opportunities for outdoor concerts, farmers' markets, storytimes, and so much more.  You can find the full calendar here.

Until Next week!  Peace, Love and Macaroni!
